HYDERABAD
Telangana State Board Vice Chairman G. Chinna Reddy asked the Center to retain the nomenclature of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme named after Mahatma Gandhi as MGNREGS.
In a statement, Mr. Reddy said on Tuesday that the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name was a malicious act and the BJP-led government at the Center would have to pay for its misfortune. The scheme, successfully used by the rural and urban poor, should not lose its connection with Mahatma Gandhi, he suggested.
Removing the MGNREGS name for this scheme, which was started in Anantapur by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and then UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, is unfair and uncalled for, especially when the BJP played no role in the country’s freedom struggle.
