China signaled on Wednesday its reluctance to join US President Donald Trump’s proposal for a “Prague of Peace” for Gaza unless it operates under the auspices of the United Nations, underscoring Beijing’s firm support for the UN-centered international order.
“No matter how the international situation develops, China will firmly protect the international system with the UN as its core, the international order based on international law and the basic norms of international relations based on the goals and principles of the UN Charter,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kuo Jiakun said at a press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday, PTI news channel reported.
Guo made the comments when asked about Trump’s comments that the UN should continue to exist, but that his proposed “Committee for Peace” “may replace” the organization.
The US invitation to countries including China, Israel, India, among others to become members of the ‘Board of Peace’ has been followed by criticism and fears that Donald Trump is trying to build an alternative or ‘rival’ to the United Nations, a Bloomberg report mentioned.
What is Trump’s ‘Prada of Peace’?
– Donald Trump’s “Peace Commission” is part of his administration’s “comprehensive plan” to end the conflict in Gaza. It includes a 20-point plan to bring peace to the Middle East.
– The US president unveiled the plaque as part of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
– A ‘Board of Peace’ chaired by Trump is expected to oversee Gaza’s post-war transition as the ceasefire, which came into effect on October 10, moves into its second phase. Its mandate is to include the creation of a new Palestinian committee in Gaza, the deployment of international security forces, the disarmament of Hamas and the reconstruction of the war-torn territory.
– China reportedly confirmed on Tuesday that it had received an invitation from Washington to join the Peace Council.
Which nations joined or rejected the ‘Board of Peace’?
President Trump invited 60 countries to join the Gaza Peace Council, with the United Arab Emirates and Argentina accepting. While the UK has expressed concerns about the invitation to Russia, Norway has opted out of the initiative.
On Wednesday, January 21, Israel agreed to join the Trump-led administration.
According to a Bloomberg report, Donald Trump is seeking to sign the committee’s entire constitution and powers in Davos on January 22 during the World Economic Forum (WEF 2026).
Asked about Trump’s plans to hold a signing ceremony to formalize the “Board of Peace” in Davos, Switzerland, and whether any Chinese representatives would attend the event, Guo said that on the “Board of Peace” issue, the Chinese side had already responded and “I have no further information to add,” PTI reported.
Pressed on whether China welcomes what some have described as growing disorder in the global system under the Trump administration, Guo reiterated that China believes that upholding the UN-centered international order serves the common interests of all countries regardless of how global circumstances change.
