Children’s Day is celebrated every year to mark the birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The day is a tribute to the legendary leader who is known for his deep affection for children and is commonly remembered as Chacha Nehru.
History and meaning of Children’s Day
Born on 14 November 1889, Jawaharlal Nehru was a well-known leader of the Indian National Congress who promoted the ideals of social justice, democracy and secularism. To honor children’s rights and raise awareness of their welfare and education, this day is celebrated every year on November 14. This day has been celebrated as Children’s Day since 1954.
Also known as Bal Diwas, it was not until 1957 that the day was officially recognized by a special government edict. On this day, the Department of Posts and Telegraphs of India issued first day covers and three commemorative stamps to commemorate the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru.
