Chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s future in India hangs in the balance, BCCI will take a call soon

Ajit Agarkar’s future as India’s chief selector is set to be decided soon, with the BCCI expected to hold a crucial meeting with the chairman of the senior selection committee.

A top source confirmed to Sports Tak that senior BCCI officials are likely to meet Agarkar to discuss whether he will continue in his role. While there is support within the BCCI and the Indian team for Agarkar to remain the chief selector, the final decision will depend on the outcome of the meeting.

A source said the BCCI is open to offering the former India fast bowler an extension. However, Agarkar will also have to decide whether he wants to continue in the challenging role.

His position has come under scrutiny in recent weeks, especially with his current extension set to expire in September. The board is also considering another one-year extension, but a final decision has yet to be made.

Reports also suggested differences between sections of the BCCI and the selection committee over the handling of Rohit Sharma’s ODI future, adding another layer of uncertainty to the situation.

Agarkar remains in charge of the Indian selection committee for now. However, the upcoming meeting with the BCCI top brass could prove to be decisive in deciding whether he continues as chief selector or whether the board opts for a change.

With India facing an important period across formats, BCCI’s decision on Agarkar’s future is expected to be in the limelight soon.

HOW INDIA GOT BEHIND AGARKAR

Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the chairman of India’s senior selection committee in July 2023, replacing Chetan Sharma who resigned earlier that year.

India’s performance under Agarkar’s selection panel has produced some big highs. Soon after his appointment, India reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, although they lost to Australia. The biggest success came in 2024 when India ended their long wait for an ICC title by winning the T20 World Cup, defeating South Africa in a dramatic final.

The success continued in 2025 as India won the Champions Trophy, defeating New Zealand in the final and finishing the tournament undefeated.

However, Agarkar’s tenure was not without setbacks. India suffered a historic home Test series defeat to New Zealand and also suffered a disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign in Australia.

Overall, India’s record under Agarkar has been defined by major ICC triumphs along with difficult results during periods of transition and significant selection changes.
