Manchester United supporters are gaining a deeper understanding of 17-year-old striker Chido Obi-Martin’s talents as he continues to make strides in the first-team setup. The young forward, who joined from Arsenal in September, has already featured in four senior games since last month, showcasing the prolific goalscoring ability that earned him a stellar reputation at youth level.
At United, Obi has maintained his impressive form, netting 12 goals in just nine appearances for the U18s in both the Premier League and FA Youth Cup. His rapid development saw him promoted to the U21 squad in January, and by February, he had earned a spot in the senior team.
During the recent international break, Obi made his debut for Denmark’s U21 side, coming on as a substitute in friendlies against Poland and Italy, both of which ended in draws. Despite being up to five years younger than some of his teammates and opponents, the teenager left a positive impression on coach Steffen Højer.
Højer, speaking to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, praised Obi’s adaptability and attitude:
"He is a very young man. He was there to learn, and we had him with us to assess him. He makes a good impression, and I was extremely pleased to see how he adapted to the squad and how the boys welcomed him."
The coach added that Obi has had a "really good trip" and encouraged him to return to Manchester United and fight for more playing time. When discussing Obi’s specific abilities, Højer highlighted his clinical finishing and positional awareness in the box:
"What you hope for with a player like him is that he gets that one chance because his absolute key strength is being in the box and putting the ball in the net. That chance didn’t come. But he came in and worked with the team in a tough situation, so you couldn’t really expect much more from him."
With big expectations surrounding the teenager, Obi-Martin’s journey at Manchester United is one to watch as he continues to develop and strive for more opportunities at the highest level.
