According to an Indian Express report, the owner of a Ranchi restaurant was allegedly shot dead by a customer who was served non-vegetarian biryani instead of the vegetarian meal he had ordered.
The incident took place on Saturday evening after an unidentified customer who had ordered vegetarian biryani and took the package home realized he had received chicken biryani, a report quoting police said. After realizing that he had brought chciken biryani home, the customer called 50-year-old Vijay Nag, the owner of the restaurant, and argued with him over the phone.
How did the matter escalate?
According to the police officers mentioned in the report, the matter escalated after the phone call. At 11:30 p.m., a furious customer went to the restaurant with three of his companions while Vijay Nag was dining there. After a brief conversation, the issue escalated, leading to pushing and shoving between those involved.”
“In the middle of the scuffle, the customer pulled out a gun and shot Vijay in the chest before fleeing the scene,” the report quoted one of the officers as saying.
People rushed to the spot after hearing the gunshots but discovered Vijay lying on the floor. The accused allegedly fled the scene in their car.
The restaurant owner was rushed to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Officers from Kanke Police Station rushed to the scene and barricaded the area to nab the accused.
Was the biryani dispute just the reason?
Regarding the incident, Kanke MLA and Congress leader Suresh Kumar Baitha said in a report, “It is said that four men came in the night and ordered vegetarian food, but later found chicken bones in it, which escalated the matter. Suddenly, the customer pulled out a gun and fired at Vijay.”
Baitha, however, argued that the case may not be limited to serving chicken biryani and claimed that it could also be a property dispute as some people were allegedly following Vijay’s property.
Meanwhile, Vijay’s family members protested and asked the police to arrest all the accused within 24 hours and threatened to launch a large-scale protest across the city. The police informed that they are reviewing the CCTV footage to nab the accused.
