An investigation is currently underway after reports said several people were shot at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in New Jersey’s Union, Eyewitness News reported Sunday (local time).
The incident happened at the Chick-fil-A on Route 22 just before 9:00 p.m. Saturday (local time). After the incident, Union County Police secured the restaurant in Union and spoke with employees and witnesses. Authorities have not yet released how many people were injured in the incident, the severity of their injuries, or whether anyone has been named as a suspect or person of interest.
Witnesses recall the horror
A Lyft driver who was in the area told Eyewitness News he heard at least seven gunshots nearby as he went to buy food from a restaurant. He added: “I finished my journey there, in the return zone. I heard gunshots. When I finished my journey, I went to Chick-fil-A to buy two hamburgers – I saw the police and I heard gunshots very close.”
According to the report, some workers said their family members were being held inside the restaurant as the investigation continued. The media spoke to the father of one of the workers, who said his son called him in a panic saying several masked suspects had entered the business. He also says several of his co-workers were injured in the shooting. The father of one of the workers said he went to the restaurant, described what he called a ‘war zone’.
The Union County Prosecutor says the investigation is ongoing. They have not released any information about what happened. Union is located southwest of Newark and directly west of Newark Liberty International Airport.
Shooting in the USA
Shootings and violent incidents are becoming more common in the United States, and cases are coming to light almost every day. According to Wane, a shooting was reported Saturday night on the southeast side of Fort Wayne that injured four and killed one. The police department responded to the incident in the 3200 block of Abbott Street, north of McMillen Park, around 11:16 p.m. (local time).
At the scene, police found four people with apparent gunshot wounds. Another person went to the emergency room at a nearby hospital with injuries related to the shooting.
In another incident, a man stabbed three people with a machete at the Grand Central subway station Saturday morning in what Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch described as a random attack. The suspect was later shot and killed, the New York Times reported.
The incident began around 9:40 a.m. when the suspect, who had been seen erratically on a subway train, got off at the Grand Central-42nd Street station, Tisch said at a news conference at the station on Saturday. He then slashed one person on train platform seven and two others on platforms four, five and six downtown before being shot dead by a police officer, she said.
On April 5, another shooting was reported near Lafayette Park, located just across the street from the White House. According to an AP report, US President Donald Trump was spending the weekend at the White House during the overnight shooting incident. However, after the firing was reported, operations remained normal but security in the area was beefed up.
