UTHAPPA believes that Pujara was supposed to call time for his career earlier, especially after he was omitted from the Border-Gavascar trophy team in 2024. Uthappa, when he spoke on YouTube, said, “I think he had expanded his stay a little. I think he was told he was no longer considering and this English tour was the last straw. He seemed to be very impossible for the Indian cricket, but apparently returned to him, but it’s very hard.

Do you think Cheteshwar Pujara was supposed to leave earlier?
Uthappa, albeit critical of timing, also appreciated Pujar’s determination and shared a kind memory of the home cricket. He remembered the match of the Ranji Trophy between Karnataka and Saurashtra in 2009–10 when the loan scored the triple century. “He repeated 200 on the stump. I went to practice early in the morning and he was there at 7:30 pm when he noticed twice the previous day. This showed his obsession with batting and his hunger to be out,” Uthappa said. For Uthappu, Pujar’s heritage is clear. While retiring could come later than expected, his contribution to the Indian test cricket remains unforgettable.
