What I like most about Chennai is what it looks like at home, even someone who has arrived. This feeling of belonging is in every corner of the street. I love to start watching my day sunrise on Elliot’s beach, stop by a temple or a church that has been standing for centuries, and then enter the place of buzzing young minds or campus as a former Queen Mary College.
“Foreigners connect”
People here have an unshakable custom that they manifest themselves for their neighbors, the environment and the community. In South Chennai, I saw foreigners connecting to protect Palikaranai swamps, the artists gathered to revive the cultural spaces, and people meet to support Fisherfolk in cyclones.
The city mixes civil pride with personal responsibility, whether planting seedlings, cleaning beaches or lending a hand at the time of trouble. This is not only charity, but the way of life, rooted in empathy and solidarity. This is what really defines Chennai for its beaches, food or art. It’s the heart of our people.
