One of the distinctive features of the Chenab bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, reportedly the highest arch-railway bridge in the world, is that the structure would stand, even if one of the eight support pier would be taken, and still strong enough to keep the train on it, though slower speed. Credit for conceptualization of design that allows this stability is G. Madhavi Lata, professor of building engineering at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengalur.
For almost two decades, AFCONS, an engineering company, has been a consultant of the AFCONS infrastructure. It stands 359 meters above the Chenab River, it is as high as the four Qutb Minars stacked on top of each other.

Due to the height and terrain, the parabolic arc-more structure carrying a burden-which is supported by the railway bridge, it could be attacked by winds that can affect 220 km / ha because it includes the Himalayan mountains, it must face the strongest earthquakes, Lata Hindu. “Therefore, it is a challenge to ensure that the foundations of the bridge resting on the slopes of these connecting mountains are very strong,” she explained.
These mountains often have unexpected cracks and cracks and strengthen their strength injecting – applying cement in these cracks to function as adhesive. This was the first Stint Dr. Lates when designing a bridge in the Himalayas. “I joined IISC in 2003 as a associate professor and since 2005 I have been connected with this project for me it was the biggest challenge,” she added.
This is also the only arched railway bridge in India and there are only a few comparable constructions in the world, for example in China it has supplied.
The Chenab bridge extends 1,315 meters and has a range of 467 meters. The bridge is one of the 927 bridges in the Rail Link project (USBL) Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla.
