Four years after passing Padma Shri Guru ChechanCheri Kunhiraman Nair founded his big nephew Kalamandalam Premkumar 42 years ago 42 years ago
“It was an extraordinary talent,” said Mr. Premkumar, remembling the children’s days spent by watching the uncle of the stage as Krishna. “I have always been fascinated by it, so I joined Kerala Kalamandalam right after class X,” he added.
The center, which offers training in both Kathakali and Bharatanatyam, is currently training over 300 students in fields such as Kathakali Sangeetham (Music), Chend, Maddalam, Keralanadanam and even the complex art of taste (Kathakali Makeup). Over the years, more girls have begun to learn Kathakali at school and break into what was once an artistic form controlled by men-a “positive change”, says Premumar. The Union’s government is currently providing financial assistance.
As soon as Kathakali was deeply rooted at the temple festivals, it is now gradually disappearing from Malabar. In the fight against this disappearing public acquaintance, the school organizes the annual Kathakali Padana Shibiram (Kathakali Learning Workshop) during April and May.
Eleven -year -old Thanmayi Renjith, a workshop participant, has now entered regular classes. “At first I was reluctant to join, but once I started learning, I loved it,” she said.
For Anagha MS it was watching Kuchavrittam, which inspired her to capture a classic dance drama. “I was excited about his grandeur,” she said.
“It takes hours to improve the details. A costume with many layers and heavy heads can be difficult to handle. This is what Kathakali does so unique,” Anagha added.
“The school transmits Kunjiramettan’s heritage,” said Vijayalakshmi K., resident and enthusiast Kathakali, and kindly remembered the Guru of Chechancheri, who died in March 2021 at the age of 104.
