Real Betis’ rising star, Jesus Rodriguez, has reportedly caught the attention of Premier League giants Chelsea and Liverpool, according to recent reports. The 19-year-old winger has been a standout performer in an otherwise disappointing season for Betis, showcasing his talent alongside Manchester United loanee Antony.
Rodriguez, born in Seville, made his senior debut last Halloween, setting up a goal within 20 minutes of his introduction during a Copa del Rey match against non-league side CD Gevora. Since then, his rapid development has been nothing short of remarkable.
Under the guidance of manager Manuel Pellegrini, Rodriguez has started Betis’ last seven La Liga matches. During this period, he scored his first goal for the club against Alaves and won a crucial penalty, converted by Isco, in a victory over Real Madrid last weekend.
Rodriguez’s fearless style of play, characterized by his willingness to take on defenders at every opportunity, has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea and Liverpool. As per the Daily Mail, both clubs are closely monitoring the young talent. Despite signing a five-year contract extension in September, which includes a €50 million (£42 million) release clause, Rodriguez remains focused on his current club.
In an interview with El Desmarque earlier this year, Rodriguez stated, “Right now I feel like I’m doing well at the club. I have a contract until 2029, and I hope it’s many more years. I’m happy here at Betis, and I’ll give everything for the team while I’m here.”
Rodriguez’s journey to Betis’ first team was far from straightforward. He underwent three trials before the club recognized his potential and brought him into their youth setup in the summer of 2021. His exceptional dribbling and speed quickly caught Pellegrini’s eye, and he has since become a key figure in the team.
The Spain under-19 international is determined to stay true to his playing style. “If I go up to a team or join another team, I can’t lose my identity,” he emphasized. “Dribbling and speed are my strengths, and I won’t change my game to please others.”
Rodriguez’s commitment to his principles is evident in his statistics. This season, he has attempted an impressive 8.4 take-ons per 90 minutes, a figure surpassed only by Barcelona’s 17-year-old sensation, Lamine Yamal, among La Liga regulars.
As the transfer rumor mill continues to turn, Rodriguez remains focused on his development at Betis, where he is determined to make the most of his opportunity while staying true to the qualities that have brought him this far.
