Minister for Water Sources Duraimurugan during inauguration of equipment.
“The Duraimurugan Ministry of Water Sources launched two control dams and a dam with ventilation openings across the Kaundinya River in Gudiyatham to prevent floods during the monsoon and provide access to key cities.
The Minister was accompanied by VR Subbubulaxmi collector and higher officials of the Water Resources Department (WRD).
“The check dams will help irrigate at least 560 hectares of agricultural land in the region. In addition, local bodies can sink boreholes along the equipment to draw water for consumption,” said S. Kalipriyarn, auxiliary engineer, WRD (Gudiyatham), Hindus.
The inspection dams were financed by NABARD as part of the permanent scheme of flood restoration 2023-24, were built at the price of 25 crore. Each device of 120 meters and 1.2 meters has a capacity of 2.51 MCFT (a million cubic feet) and can release 53,000 CUSECS floods.
They will help recharge at least 530 Farmwells in the region. Approximately 10-12 agricultural villages will benefit because groundwater within three km would increase.
After a long fight, the inhabitants in Gudiyatham and the adjacent agricultural villages now have a dam, built at the price of 8.41 GBP Crore using the funds from NABARD. Connects Thalayatham with the village of Sunnabupettai across the river .
The value measures 104.2 meters in length and at a height of 2.7 meters (from the river) with 10 vents. During the monsoon, 58,000 CUSECS per minute may release floods. Officials stated that such high rainwater release would prevent the equipment from flooding.
“Previously, we had to get a detour of at least 20 km to reach Gudiyatham, Pernambut and Pallikond. School vans and ambulances had to navigate a long sandy way. The new bridge ended our suffering,” said S. Pechiammal, resident.
A 500 -meter -long tiled track was also started. It was built at the price of 2.91 GBP Crore on the left volume of the river. Officials say that steel fencing was built to avoid accidents.
