ChatGPT global outage: Thousands of users report error messages and suspended calls in US, India and other regions | Today’s news

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is experiencing a global outage today, leaving thousands of users stranded with error messages and stopped prompts. There were reports of service outages in the United States, India and many other regions.

By 15:14 (IST), independent outage tracker Downdetector had recorded more than 1,500 complaints in India, while reports in the United States exceeded 3,000 at the time of writing. The breach of the generative AI platform has spread to several other regions, including Europe.

Since early morning, the outage has rapidly worsened, leaving software developers, professionals and students stranded in the middle of the task. Many users shared details of the outage on social media platforms such as X.

OpenAI says it is monitoring the recovery

Meanwhile, OpenAI also acknowledged the company’s global outage status page.

“There are currently issues,” the company said, adding that its team has applied mitigations and is monitoring the recovery.

Which services are affected?

The breach affected OpenAI’s core ecosystem and affected nearly every consumer and developer device. These include:

  • Voice mode and image generation: Interactive audio features, including real-time voice mode and image generation features, repeatedly fail to initialize or time out in the middle of a session.
  • Codex and API integration: Developers and enterprises that rely on OpenAI APIs for automated workflows, backend applications and code processing are also being hit by request rejections.

Although OpenAI did not release specific technical details, it confirmed that recovery efforts are underway. It also has yet to provide a timeline for when the outage is expected to be fixed and users will be able to resume their tasks.

What should users do because ChatGPT is not working?

If you’re currently experiencing error messages or frozen prompts due to a global ChatGPT outage, there are a few simple troubleshooting steps you can try to get things working again:

  • Refresh the page or start a new chat. Don’t forget to clear your browser cache and cookies. You can also try using an incognito or private browsing window to see if that works.
  • Switch to another network if possible. Use mobile data instead of Wi-Fi to avoid localized routing conflicts.
  • Consider temporarily switching to alternative generative AI tools like Claude or Gemini until services stabilize.

While OpenAI’s ChatGPT faces an outage, its competitor Anthropic has launched its latest flagship, the Claude Opus 5, which boasts breakthrough coding and knowledge work performance at half the price of its predecessor. This is the fourth model that the company has launched in less than two months.
