Vice-Capital of England Charlie Dean believes that Natalie Sciver-Brut’s arrival as captain and Charlotte Edwards as head coach was a renewed sense of energy, focus and purpose to the National Party. When England is preparing for Bangladesh, Dean was thinking about how the duo of the management had already formed and created what she described as a “little new beginning” for the group.
“Yeah, I think when Nat and Lottie feel like a little new beginning for all of us,” Dean said. “The team players may not have changed much, but the way we are approaching is really specific, as we go about our cricket ODI – the attention to the details, the hunger to show our harshness and determination – that’s something we all buy.”
Dean, who was taken over by the vice -chairman before the series, spoke of Edwards’s influence since the takeover of Edwards. The former Captain of England, known for his peaceful presence and tactical presence, quickly gained the confidence of players. “Lottie is a kind of coach who plays the game really well,” Dean said. “When things speak, suddenly it makes sense. The cricket can be a complicated game, but it has this ability to simplify things and get us to focus on the right details. She broke things, go to specifics – that really helped us as a group. It’s a great environment.”
As a vice-chairman, Dean sees his role as supportive and strategic-he says that Sciver-Brunt has what he has to effectively lead while ready to perform if necessary. “I think my task is to be a bit of a sound plate for NAT,” she explained. “I want to make sure it has everything he has to be in his decisions, and to be the best version of myself. I’m not someone who comes up with a dozen ideas at once, but I like to think about the game deeply and talk to see something that could help.”
Dean also appreciated the depth of leadership on the side, especially the returning Heather Knight. “Heather has been brilliant since returning from the injury,” Dean said. “Having your experience and knowledge to participate was really valuable. Every day we learn from each other and really feel like a new chapter for us as a group.”
