The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the unnatural death of Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg will file a charge sheet in a local court on December 12, said Special Director General of Police (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta.
Garg died while swimming in the sea off an island in Singapore on September 19. Seven people, including his manager Siddharth Sharma and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, have been arrested in connection with his death.
“We have almost completed the investigation after recording the statements of more than 300 people. We will file a chargesheet in the case on December 12,” Mr Gupta told reporters in Guwahati on Saturday (Dec 06, 2025).
Earlier, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the SIT was in the process of filing a charge sheet. “The SIT has told me that there are 3,000 to 3,500 documents that need to be signed and copied. We have also discussed (filing the chargesheet) with the Advocate General,” he said.
On November 25, he told the 126-member state assembly that one person murdered Gargo and the others collaborated. He claimed it was “plain and simple murder”.
“They (opposition parties) attacked me and asked how I could come to the conclusion that Zubeen was murdered. According to the court record, it was murder. We have accused four to five persons of murder,” the chief minister said.
Without divulging details, he claimed that a big conspiracy was hatched against Garg before the COVID-19 pandemic and said his death was linked to financial transactions.
“We have evidence. That’s why I told the SIT to first file a chargesheet in the murder case and then widen the investigation so that no one can escape,” he said.
Garg was not at his best when he traveled to Singapore to perform at the 4th Northeast India Festival organized by Mr. Mahanta.
Others arrested in connection with Garg’s death are his cousin Sandipan Garg, deputy superintendent of police, personal security officers Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya, bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta. All are in judicial custody.
