Chants of Rohit Sharma ring out at the Wankhede during the opening ceremony of the T20 World Cup

February 7, 2026

The Wankhede Stadium, the cauldron of Indian cricket history, was transformed into a glittering stage of light and sound on Saturday as the T20 World Cup 2026 was officially declared open. While the evening promised a mix of Bollywood glamor and high-octane music, the loudest roar was reserved for the man who led India to glory in 2024 — Rohit Sharma.

Emerging in his new role as tournament ambassador, Rohit received a standing ovation and thunderous chants of ‘Mumbai Cha Raja’. Dressed in understated elegance, the former captain stood alongside ICC chairman Jay Shah to welcome the trophy. The shiny silver prize made a dramatic entrance, carried by a jetpack artist that swooped down from the night sky into the center of the square.

Rohit, accompanied by 20 young ambassadors, formally launched the tournament. For the Mumbai faithful, seeing their local hero lift the trophy again – if only for the cameras – was a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of the ‘Hitman’ as they watch this release from afar.

Rohit later met and greeted the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian side as they began their title defense at the iconic venue. Yuzvendra Chahal on broadcast duty took a short break to rush over and meet his former captain, who effortlessly stole the limelight on Saturday night.

The ceremony itself was designed to reflect the frenetic pace of T20 cricket. It began with a neo-classical flourish as sitar virtuoso Rishab Rikhiram Sharma and legendary percussionist Sivamani delivered a rhythmic medley that seamlessly blended traditional India with modern playing.

The pace then changed and Punjabi rap icon Badshah took center stage, followed by an energetic dance performance by Nora Fatehi. The playing field became a unified visual canvas, illuminated by state-of-the-art LED displays and pyrotechnics that colored the sky purple and gold.

As the fireworks died down, attention turned to the pitch for India’s opening match against the USA.

USA RATTLE INDIA

USA won the toss and elected to field and made an early impact by dismissing the in-form Abhishek Sharma (0) and Ishan Kishan (20) in the power over. The guts were on fire in the opening six overs with medium cruise control Shadley van Schalkwyk took three wickets in the over to leave India reeling at 46 for 4.

India made two changes to their XI for the opening night, leaving out Sanju Samson. Drafted into the squad as a replacement for the injured Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj was given an immediate opportunity to replace Jasprit Bumrah, who was unavailable for selection due to illness.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan survived a major scare against the Netherlands in the tournament opener in Colombo, needing a late blitz from Faheem Ashraf to chase down 148. Meanwhile, West Indies cruised to a dominant win over Scotland in Kolkata, riding on a blistering half-century from Shimron Hetmyer and a five-century attack from the Croma Hatrick Haul.
