In a large intervention against obscene content that is spreading online, the center has banned applications and websites of 25 OTT platforms, including Ullu, Altt, Desiflix, Big Shots and others.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting identified a total of 25 links that showed inappropriate videos, including obscene and adult content.
Among the 25 banned platforms were Altt Ekta Kapoor, formerly known as Alt Balaji.
In its notice, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated that it ordered Internet service providers (ISP) to deactivate public access to these 25 platforms.
The decision was taken after consultation with MHA, MWCD, Meity, Department of Legal Affairs (Mine), industrial bodies FICCI and CII and experts in the field of women’s and rights rights.
The movement of the center comes as part of the ongoing effort to regulate digital platforms and prevent the circulation of explicit material online.

At the time of writing this article, LIVEMINT could not gain access to links to at least four websites in the list, including Ull and Altt.
In its notice, MIB noted that intermediaries are responsible for removing or deactivating access to unlawful information under the 2000 Information Technology Act and the rules of information technology (intermediary instructions and ethical digital media code), 2021.
What did the center say?
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in its notice of 23 July noted that these 25 applications and websites violated the law by displaying the content that is prohibited, and at the same time provokes an indecent representation of the Women (Prohibition) Act, Section 67 IT Act and Section 292 IPC.
“Internet service providers are hereby warned to deactivate or remove public access to the above website in India,” he said in the announcement.
MIB justified the ban and stated that the content on these platforms OTT had sexual allusions and, in some cases, “long parts of sexually explicit scenes involving nudity, which are pornographic in nature”.
“There was almost no story, topic or report in the social context. A large part of the content was obscene and vulgar,” she said.
The Center also stated that it received several public complaints against the platforms concerned.
