The Cabinet’s Economic Committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday (July 15, 2025) approved two projects of the Railway Ministry at an approximate total cost of ₹3,907 crore. These projects include the doubling of the Paradeep – Haridaspur railway line and the laying of the fourth track on the Rajkharsawan – Dangoaposi route.
The two projects covering four districts in the states of Odisha and Jharkhand will expand the existing Indian Railways network by around 145 km.
Paths to development
The proposed multi-track project will enhance the connectivity of around 1,526 villages with a population of about 14 million, while the proposed capacity increase will improve rail connectivity to several leading tourist destinations across the country, including the Lalitgiri Buddhist Complex, Shree Baladevjew Temple, Meghahatuburu Hills and others.
An official statement by the Indian Railways said that increased track capacity will significantly increase mobility, leading to improved operational efficiency and reliability of services.
These multi-tracking designs are ready to streamline operations and alleviate congestion. The projects will lead to comprehensive development in the area which will increase their employment opportunities, the statement added.
The projects are planned under the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan with a focus on enhancing multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning and stakeholder consultation. These projects will provide seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods and services.
The proposed projects are crucial routes for transportation of commodities like coal, iron ore, dolomite, limestone, gypsum etc. The capacity enhancement works will lead to an additional cargo traffic of 44 MTPA (million tonnes per annum), the statement said.
