The first phase, which began in April 2026, focuses on collecting information on housing conditions, household equipment and property. The second phase will capture individual demographic, social and economic information from households across the country.
The population census phase will include details such as age, marital status, religion, caste, education, occupation, migration and disability and other demographic parameters. Questionnaire for the second phase has been notified by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India.
The 2027 census includes a comprehensive caste enumeration
One of the main features of Census 2027 is the comprehensive caste enumeration, making it the first census since Independence to collect caste details across communities.
Until the 2011 census, the systematic enumeration of caste included Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). The decision to include a comprehensive enumeration of castes in the upcoming exercise was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs on 30 April 2025.
