CBSE class 12 students saw a significant increase in marks after the revaluation

Class 12 aspirants who applied for revaluation of their answer sheets for CBSE board exams reported a substantial increase in scores after the revaluation results were released on June 21.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come under scrutiny for irregularities in marking after implementing the on-screen marking (OSM) system for marking answer sheets for the first time for the academic year 2026-27. Students complained that they were getting blurry answer sheets, missing pages, missing maps or charts, and an answer book for a particular set of questions marked according to a different set’s marking scheme.

While more than 1.6 million candidates applied for revaluation, at least 1.39 million of them received their results on June 21. The results of the rest will be released in phases soon, CBSE said.

Candidates in all areas reported a substantial increase in marks after reassessment.

The student from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh had earlier scored 71 out of 100 in Physics. “After re-evaluation, his score increased to 90. This was due to an increase in marks in the theory paper from 41 to 60. The marks in the practical part remained the same,” said a family member of the student who did not wish to be named. The Hindu had access to the student’s new and old scores.

Similarly, at a private school in West Bengal, at least six students saw a significant revision in their history paper scores. “One of the students scored 74 out of 100 in history and after the revaluation results came out, she scored 97 out of 100. In another case, a student scored 72 and got 87 after revaluation,” said a teacher from the school.

“The school principal has changed”

“Most of the students in West Bengal have already completed their college admissions, mostly based on their old marks. After the CBSE revaluation results came, our school topper has changed. We are still evaluating the situation and we also expect students to get significantly higher marks in sociology,” the teacher mentioned.

A CSBE evaluator, who examined the answer sheets using OSM technology, told The Hindu that the CBSE had declared that the evaluation must be conducted using the OSM system, just two weeks before the start of the evaluation. “It was a complete mess. Some of the answer scripts were not completely scanned and were rejected by the evaluators. Teachers in remote areas have little computer knowledge and it might be difficult for them to evaluate the answer scripts,” said the evaluator, requesting anonymity.

A student in Odisha gained 12 points in chemistry and five points in English in the revaluation results, while another student in Delhi gained five points in history.

CBSE has not provided official data on how many students who applied for revaluation have seen their scores increase.

“Results of around 87% candidates who have applied for revaluation and/or verification of observed issues have been declared. Results for the remaining candidates will also be released in phases and the entire process is expected to be completed soon,” CBSE said in an official release.

The CBSE had initially announced the results of the Class 12 exams on May 13 for around 17.69 lakh candidates.

As part of its post-result services, CBSE has opened a window for candidates from May 19 to May 25 to get scanned copies of their rated answer sheets. Subsequently, candidates were given the opportunity to apply for Verification of Observed Issues and/or Reassessment from June 2nd to June 7th.

Candidates who have applied for Verification of Tracked Issues and for whom CBSE has declared the result as ‘no change’ will be offered an opportunity if they wish to inspect their recorders at the concerned CBSE regional office, CBSE said in a release.

Like last year in all these cases Verification of problems observed where the candidate’s eligibility is proved, it is corrected and evaluated by CBSE and their marks are updated. Interested parties can see the status of their requests on the Digilocker platform.

While the revised mark sheets are uploaded on Digilocker, CBSE is yet to clarify whether it will release physical copies of the revised mark sheets.

CBSE officials said that last year, the revaluation and verification results were released from June 27 to July 11.

They also said that every application received from students was evaluated on the merits and every answer book that undergoes re-evaluation was checked by two evaluators.

“In case, for any reason, including the evaluation of the assessors, the marks do not match the marking scheme, they are corrected in the revaluation process,” officials said.

The CBSE has reduced the fee for scanned copies from ₹700 to ₹100, for verification of problems observed in answer sheets from ₹500 to ₹100 and for revaluation from ₹100 to ₹25 per question.

Officials also said that the fee will be refunded if the marks in source accounts are increased after the revaluation result.

The CBSE also said that the notification for supplementary examinations for private and regular candidates will be issued soon.
