The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team probing the stampede that took place during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally at Velusamypuram in Karur on September 27 conducted inquiries with at least 10 traders running their businesses at the site of the incident on Sunday.
According to sources, the Central agency has issued summons to many people from Karur and asked them to appear before officials at the Circuit House, where they have been camping since the third week of October. The persons summoned were supposed to witness the stampede, which claimed 41 victims.
At least 10 persons appeared before the CBI team who received summons. Owners of grocery stores, restaurants and textile showrooms located near the spot where TVK founder Vijay addressed a massive crowd in Velusamypuram were among those who appeared before CBI officials. After checking their identities, armed reserve police officers stationed at Circuit House for security allowed the traders to enter for investigation.
CBI officials are said to have questioned them about the circumstances and causes that led to the stampede, the security measures taken at Velusamypuram and the measures taken by TVK officials. Each of them was interrogated between 30 minutes and two hours.
A CBI team led by Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar visited the stampede site in Velusamypuram on Friday. The team also visited the site on Saturday and conducted intensive investigations for about 15 hours.
According to sources, the CBI used a 3D laser scanner, a gadget used by crime sleuths to meticulously document minute and intricate details, to examine the spot and gather various inputs. The CBI officials were assisted in their task by the Karur police.
