CBI arrests accused in digital arrest case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an accused from Rajkot in Gujarat in connection with the ongoing investigation into the digital arrest cyber fraud case.
The accused Shankar Pansari alias Shankar Rajput hails from Karnal in Haryana. The CBI has re-registered the case, which was earlier initiated by the Cyber Crime Unit in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, on the direction of the Supreme Court.
The accused forced the senior citizen to transfer ₹25.65 lakh to two different bank accounts under the threat of digital arrest. According to the complaint, the victim received threatening calls from unknown persons posing as officials of security and counter-terrorism agencies.
The callers falsely claimed that her bank account was being used for terrorist-related activities and threatened her with arrest and confiscation of her property. To lend credibility to their claims, they shared a fabricated garnishment order, the agency said.
