CB-CID starts probing the Palani math land registration

The Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) on Thursday (July 16, 2026) launched an investigation into the fraudulent registration of 1.35 acres of land belonging to Arulmig Dhandapani Swamigal Madam (Mathematics) at Palani foothills in Dindigul district.

A team of 15 police officers led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ajay Thangam conducted an investigation in Palani.

Palani Adivaram police have registered a case against suspended sub-registrar Justin Manikandan Subramanian and others. The government subsequently handed over the investigation of the case to the CB-CID.

The police then handed over all the documents related to the case to the CB-CID team comprising Inspector Santhanalakshmi, who reached the Palani Devasthanam headquarters and conducted an investigation. The team examined documents related to the land issue, including objections raised by the Mathematical Department of Records. She also recorded statements from temple officials and employees.

Meanwhile, the registration department has constituted a three-member committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the fraudulent registration of the Palani temple plot. The committee consists of Additional Inspector General of Registration, Assistant Inspector General of Registration and District Registrar.

The Commission will conduct a detailed inquiry with the Sub-Registrar (in-charge) who was on duty on the day of registration, the Sub-Registrar who was on leave, the District Registrar and Assistants. He will also examine the CCTV footage of the office.

On Wednesday (July 15, 2026), the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court allowed an appeal filed by a mathematician and declared void a controversial sale deed executed in favor of certain individuals in respect of 1.35 acres of land.

Meanwhile, Mr. Subramanian, the sub-registrar (in-charge) who registered the document, applied to the High Court for anticipatory bail. The registration department also suspended district registrar Sasikala.
