The Perambra police on Wednesday registered a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against a group of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) workers for allegedly barging into the Changaroth grama panchayat office, vandalizing its premises and humiliating the outgoing panchayat president by resorting to “caste abuse” during post-caste celebrations.
The case was registered on the complaint of Unni Vengeri, outgoing president of the panchayat, to the Perambra Deputy Superintendent of Police. According to him, the incident took place on December 13, shortly after the results of the local body elections were announced.
In his complaint, Mr Vengeri, a leader of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), alleged that the IUML workers, along with about 25 others, barged into the office, damaged office fixtures and sprayed cow dung water on the premises “as a cleansing exercise”, while shouting abusive slogans.
Mr. Vengeri, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste community, alleged that the act was aimed at insulting him and others from his community.
LDF activists staged a protest in the area condemning the alleged humiliation of their leader.
