The Kollam East police have registered a case against six men who allegedly tried to form a gangster association and set up an office in the city. The action follows the emergence of disturbing images of the group congregating while brandishing firearms and other deadly weapons. Authorities have identified and arrested Manikandan (50) from Irattakulangar, Noufal (40) from Jonakapuram, Zacharii (37) from Shaktikulangar, Sherin (39) from Mundakkal, Shanu (28) from Pallithottam and Nizamuddin (53) from Kadappakkada. The accused were charged under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) but were later released on bail.
Investigation revealed that the incidents took place over a period of several days in January at a residence in Mundakkal. During these meetings, the group took photographs posing with weapons and shot videos claiming to be setting up a formal headquarters for their criminal organization near Sharada Math in Kollam. Other footage showed the men dancing on public roads to loud music, an act police believe was orchestrated to assert dominance and intimidate the local community.
The police took suo motu cognizance of the matter after provocative videos started going viral on social media. There have been similar cases where individuals have attracted police action to celebrate birthdays in public by cutting cakes with machetes and sharing the footage online to gain fame.
