
The video recorded inside the Canara Bank branch in Chikkamagalur, Karnataka, became viral and again evoked discussion on the use of language in public services. The clip shows that a woman speaking Kannada who confronts employees of a bank who couldn’t help her in a local language.
In shots, a woman who says he doesn’t know English- questions why Malaysian-speaking employees manipulates the counter. She asks, “Why is he here, if he doesn’t understand Cannada?” Meanwhile, the head of the branch is seen in Malayalam with another employee because the customer requires an explanation of the money deducted from her account without notice.
“She wasn’t even cordial with me,” says the woman in the video. “When I tried to ask, she started to make strange faces.” A bank official who entered the dispute said, “You weren’t even heartbeat.”

The video divided the opinion online. Some users supported the customer while others accused it of creating unnecessary drama for social media attention. One person noted, “What do you want, information or viral video?” Another wrote, “Someone is already helping her in Cannada. So what is the problem?”
However, many users have supported the fears of a woman and raised questions about the bank’s recruitment procedures.
One user published: “As customers, we expect to be with respect and in the language we are satisfied with. After all, it is our money that keeps the bank in operation. Banks of the public sector such as Canara Bank were nationalized to serve all citizens, not only a few.”
Phrases like “Why aren’t the locals give job opportunities?” And “If you are working in Karnataka, you must be able to serve in Kannada,” several users have repeated.
The official account of Canara Bank in response to criticism shared by a statement that has officially confirmed its obligation to Kannada and its customers.
The statement is: “Kannada is our foundation, your support is our strength. For Canara Bank, Karnataka is not just a state, it is our birthplace.
The bank also added that while employees may come from different parts of India, “our heart always resonates with our customers.”
This incident follows another viral video from the SBI Surya Nagar branch in Bengalur (Anekal Taluk), where the head of the branch allegedly refused to speak Kannada with the local customer. The Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah described this behavior as “strongly condemnable” and appreciated the bank for a quick event.
