PA Public Works and Tourism Minister Mohamed Riyas said the ambitious Canal City project in Kozhikode will be developed on the Paris model and transform the Conolly Canal into a hub for passenger transport, cargo movement and tourism.
Inaugurating the new bridge at Puthiyapalam over the Conolly Canal on Friday, Mr. Riyas said that ₹73.21 crore has been sanctioned for the first phase of development of the Canal City project.
“Development initiatives are underway to transform Calicut into New Calicut. The state government has sanctioned ₹ 1,312.67 crore for the construction of 12 roads in Kozhikode. The government has given unprecedented attention to the development of the city. Although the target was to build 100 bridges in Riy Kerala which Mr. said the bridge at Puthiyapalam would benefit the entire city.
The new bridge connects Puthiyapalam with Meenchanda Mini Bypass. Work began after the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) sanctioned ₹60 crore in 2022.
Built at a cost of ₹ 16.53 crore, the bow-string arch bridge is 195 meters long and 11 meters wide. Access roads were also built on both sides. ₹40 crore was spent on land purchase. The construction was done by the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB).
With the opening of the new bridge, access to the railway station, Palayam, Thali and Kallai has become easier. As the Conolly Canal is part of the National Waterway, the bridge was designed with the required vertical clearance.
