Canada Day 2026: What’s Open and What’s Closed – Guide to Public Transport, Shopping Malls and Attractions | Today’s news

As Canadians prepare to celebrate Canada Day on Wednesday, Toronto residents and visitors are advised to plan ahead, with many government offices, banks and retail stores closed for the public holiday while several major attractions and essential services remain open.

What’s open and closed on Canada Day?

Celebrated annually on July 1, Canada Day commemorates the anniversary of Confederation in 1867 and is one of Canada’s most celebrated public holidays. Across Toronto, festivities will include fireworks, cultural events and public celebrations, but the statutory holiday will also bring significant changes to operating hours and public services.

All major banks, government offices and Toronto Public Library branches will be closed for the day. Canada Post mail delivery will also be suspended while Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) stores across the city will remain closed.

Public transport will continue to operate, albeit according to modified timetables. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will operate on a holiday schedule, while GO Transit services will operate on their Saturday schedules. Residents are encouraged to check the websites of public transport providers for specific route information before travelling.

Despite the widespread closures, many of Toronto’s top tourist attractions will remain open to accommodate the holiday crowds.

The CN Tower will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., while Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada will welcome visitors from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Other attractions that remain open include Casa Loma, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the Toronto Zoo and Riverdale Farm. Canada’s Wonderland and its Splash Works water park will also be open during the holiday season.

Some shopping centers will be open with reduced holiday hours. CF Toronto Eaton Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., while destinations including Pacific Mall, Vaughan Mills, Square One Shopping Center and Toronto Premium Outlets will also welcome shoppers. However, major shopping centers including Yorkdale Shopping Centre, Scarborough Town Centre, CF Fairview Mall, CF Sherway Gardens, Dufferin Mall and Shops at Don Mills will remain closed.

For those looking for groceries or pharmacy services, some vendors will remain open. Select Rabba Fine Foods, Pusateri’s, Eataly, Shoppers Drug Mart and Rexall locations will operate on adjusted schedules, although customers are encouraged to check local hours before traveling.

Entertainment venues and select cultural institutions are also expected to be open, including the Aga Khan Museum, Cineplex theaters and Centerville theme park, providing additional options for residents and tourists celebrating the holiday in Canada’s largest city.

City officials urged residents to check with individual locations and businesses before leaving, as hours of operation may vary throughout the Greater Toronto Area during Canada Day celebrations.
