Energy drinks are among the most commonly consumed drinks available on the market. However, the recent research work published in nature has combined the common component of the energy drink with the progression of leukemia of blood cancer, people said.
Taurin – an amino acid that occurs naturally in proteins such as meat and fish – is a common component in many popular energy drinks.
However, the research work has indicated that taurine can promote leukemogenesis – the development of leukemic cells. Also “identifies taurin as a key regulator of myeloid malignancies”, which, like leukemia, are cancer that starts in the blood.
The study revealed that cancer cells in mice were powered by taurine: “Taurine supplements could significantly accelerate disease progression in immunocompetent mice (approximately three times more likely to death … indicate that taurin can support leukemic progression.”
What did the study find?
According to the statement published by the University of Rochester, which has conducted research, the Taurin cancer cells, which trigger glycolysis (breaking glucose for energy), which then supports cancer cells.
Previously, Taurin proved to be useful as a supplement to chemotherapy. The Journal of Cancer Research and Therapeutics said, as people quoted, “Taurin’s supplementation could protect against the toxicity caused by chemotherapy probably by its antioxidant capacity.”
Then scientists have added an objection to energy drinks in their report. “Since taurine is a common component of energy drinks and is often provided as a supplement to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy, our work suggests that it may be interesting to carefully consider the benefits of supplementary taurine in leukemia patients,” he said.
What is leukemia?
Leukemia is a type of blood cancer based on bone marrow, where blood cells are produced. It is characterized by abnormal and rapid increase in white blood cells, which according to medical experts can prevent the production of other healthy blood cells such as red blood cells and plates. These abnormal white blood cells, also called explosions or leukemia, are not fully developed and do not work properly.
