Campaign launched to make Mysore a ‘Child Marriage Free District’

A campaign to make Mysuru a ‘Child Marriage Free District’ was launched on Wednesday with a pledge to eradicate social evils and become a model district in the state.

Additional Deputy Commissioner P. Shivaraj inaugurated the rally organized as part of Bal Vivah Mukt Abhiyan jointly organized by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat and other departments, with the support of various NGOs.

Dr. Speaking on the occasion, Shivaraj said that child marriage is a social evil and emphasized that children must get proper education and enjoy their childhood.

He said that the district administration has taken several measures to prevent child marriage. A helpline (1098) has been launched to allow the public to file complaints and immediate action will be taken to stop such marriages. Officials along with NGOs regularly visit mass weddings and other wedding events to check cases of child marriage. He added that the public often alerts the authorities when they come across such cases.

Dr. Stressing that public support is essential to eradicate the menace, Shivaraj urged citizens to work together to make Mysuru a “child marriage-free district”.

Individuals who worked to prevent child marriage were blessed on this occasion.

Members of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, child protection workers and representatives of various NGOs were present.
