(Bloomberg) -kambodža and Thailand agreed to maintain a ceasefire and allow monitoring of neutral observers, more than a week after the ceasefire supported by the US ended the deadliest clashes among the Southeast Asian neighbors in decades.
Meeting of higher security officials from two nations held in Kuala Lumpur has approved a set of measures to strictly enforce the ceasefire and alleviate the tension of the boundaries. The so -called meeting of the General Border Committee also agreed that they were not moving or reinforced by soldiers and weapons along their approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles), Cambodian and Thai officials said on separate briefing.
The latest measures to de-eating tension can help hundreds of thousands of civilians displaced five days of clashes on both sides of the border and return home. Even after July 29, both countries continue to build units and weapons along the border after the clashes left more than 40 dead and the score more injured.
The border interviews followed the ceasefire, through Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his position as chairman ASEAN, who came in the middle of the pressure of US President Donald Trump, who used business tariffs as a lever effect. Representatives of Malaysia, China and the US participated in Wednesday border interviews as observers.
The conflict of Thailand-Kambodska monitors its roots to a long-term tension stemming from the maps of the colonial era and contracts that defined their shared limit. Relations have remained relatively stable since 2011 clashes that left dozens of dead before last month exploded into an intense struggle.
Both countries talked interviews as successful with a common statement that “the positive momentum created by the meeting reflects the shared determination of both parties to cooperate in support of permanent peace, stability, cooperation and development of their mutual contribution.”
Thailand, which previously accused Cambodia of violating the ceasefire agreement, said Phnom Penh showed sincerity to resolve the conflict. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hun Manet asked Thailand to immediately release 18 Cambodian soldiers who were in custody.
“Thailand and Cambodia are neighbors who share a common border and cannot move away from each other,” the Thai Deputy Minister of Defense Nattaphon Natrkhanit told reporters. “If both countries can solve this problem quickly, peace will return to our shared border area and our people will be able to restore their normal life.”

The border committee is one of several bilateral mechanisms between Thailand and Cambodia to resolve disputes. The Cambodia meeting was moved to Kuala Lumpur at the request of Bangkok.
According to the US Ambassador in Malaysia, Edgard Kagan carefully monitors the implementation of a ceasefire because it was a great importance for Trump for Trump.
“The US believes this is an important step. But it is important to realize that it is just a step,” Kagan told reporters. “The aim here is a sustainable and durable ceasefire, which is one that can be accepted and forced by both sides.”
Thailand and Cambodia agreed to convene a meeting of its commanders of regional armies in two weeks for subsequent discussions, Nattaphon said. The Border Committee will meet again in a month and Thailand plans to propose cooperation on check -in and suppress computer crime, he added.
