The University of Calicut plans to set up a Center of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at its main campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.
The purpose proposal submitted by Vice-Chancellor (VC) P. Raveendran was approved in the University Syndicate meeting held on Saturday (March 1, 2026). According to Syndicate members who attended the meeting, the center will offer training and research facilities of international standards to students. The university will launch new and advanced courses for this.
Sources said the facilities for the center will be provided in the university’s new building complex. Mr. Raveendran told the meeting that the plan for the center would be prepared after consulting AI experts in India and abroad. Highly qualified teachers and first class infrastructure would be available. The center would also enhance the job prospects of the students, he added.
In the meantime, the university has established a sub-committee of the Syndicate to establish rules regarding international academic cooperation. Twinning academic programs (where students split their course between a local institution and a foreign university and ultimately earn a degree at a foreign university) will be explored, along with joint and dual degree programs. The aim is to control the migration of students to other countries and to improve the university’s ranking according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
