Authorities at the University of Calicut (CU) plan to strictly enforce rules and regulations to prevent untoward incidents at the affiliated colleges and its main campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.

A recent circular issued by K. Fazalurahman, Dean, Students’ Welfare, says possession, storage or use of explosives, inflammable substances or any other dangerous materials in the university campus, affiliated colleges or hostels is strictly prohibited. “Any person who violates this provision will be subject to legal action as per applicable rules in addition to disciplinary action,” the circular said.

Students will not allow unauthorized users to stay in the dormitories. “In the event of such a violation, both the unauthorized user and the student who allowed such person to stay in the room are liable for immediate removal from the dormitory.” Students are required to refrain from activities that may damage, deface, or adversely affect the aesthetic beauty, cleanliness, or environmental quality of the university or college campus or dormitory area. The circular says that strict action will be taken against those who violate this provision.

Also, students who are not active members of a university or college campus are not permitted to enter or stay in areas such as teaching departments, study centers and other academic facilities within the campus unless specifically authorized by the appropriate authority.

The circular is a follow-up to the resolution of the Student Grievance Review Board of October 1.

On the heels of this, another order from the higher education department says that government colleges operating under it will remain closed during summer vacations declared by universities, except in cases like university exams, semester courses or other urgent circumstances. In case of urgent circumstances, the principals should take prior permission from the director of higher education to keep the hostels functioning even after March 31, the circular said.
