The state budget has proposed to prioritize the completion of 37 ongoing programs to irrigate 1.16 million hectares of land. The proposed works include 12 irrigation projects, 22 reservoir filling schemes and expansion, repair and modernization projects nearing completion.
The budget further states that 75 irrigation works at a cost of ₹ 8,045 crore will be carried out in the Krishna, Cauvery, Godavari and other basins.
Describing the rejection of pleas filed by the Tamil Nadu High Court in connection with the Mekedatu Reservoir project as a “significant legal victory” for Karnataka, the Budget said a revised detailed project report (DPR) along with a proposal for forest clearance would be submitted to the Center soon.
It also said that the remaining 18.73 km canal work in the second phase of Yettinahole Comprehensive Drinking Water Project would be completed soon. Similarly, it is reported that this year, the process of purchasing land to increase the height of Almatti Dam from 519.6 m to 524.256 m will be started.
The budget reiterated that the replacement of 33 dilapidated gates of Tungabhadra dam with new gates will be completed before the onset of monsoon. After consultation with the neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, efforts will be intensified to introduce an early alternative scheme with the approval of the Tungabhadra Council to solve the problem of lack of storage in this reservoir due to silt accumulation, it said.
