The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has conducted more than 4,000 inspections across the city in the past month as part of intensified efforts to curb illegal water and sewage connections, officials said on Monday.
The special task force, known as ‘Blue Force’, detected and cracked down on hundreds of unauthorized connections during the month-long operation, which the BWSSB said contributed to revenue losses and reduced water pressure in several areas.
The teams inspected 237 buildings in four zones and disconnected 70 illegal water connections in a single day on December 20.
The highest number of violations was recorded in the southern zone, where 33 illegal connections from 61 buildings were disconnected. This was followed by the East Zone, where 18 connections were broken, and the West Zone, where there were 15 disconnections. In the northern zone, the authorities disconnected four illegal connections from 44 buildings.
BWSSB chairman V. Ram Prasath Manohar said the task force has been formed to identify connections that bypass official meters or operate without approval.
Emphasizing that proceedings will continue until every drop is accounted for, Mr. Manohar said the board is increasingly using data inputs to identify areas with a high likelihood of violations. He warned that properties with illegal water or sewer connections would not only face disconnection, but also penalties and legal action, especially in cases of bypasses or unauthorized sanitary connections.
