The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has opened its sewage treatment plants to start-ups developing advanced water recycling technologies to encourage innovation under the Brand Bengaluru initiative.
“By enabling start-ups to work in operational wastewater treatment plants, the board aims to accelerate research, strengthen circulating water practices and expand recycled water capacity in the city,” said V. Ram Prasath Manohar, chairman of the BWSSB.
As the first project under this program, Boson Whitewater received permission to set up its operations within the Kadubeesanahalli Wastewater Treatment Plant. The company installs its advanced cleaning systems at its own expense.
According to BWSSB officials, it will provide access to raw sewage and help in linking the treated water outlet with potential buyers.
Officials said the model places zero financial burden on the board while converting BWSSB facilities into live research and test sites. “The initiative will enable start-ups to assess treatment economics, infrastructure constraints and commercial viability under real-world conditions,” Mr Manohar said.
Through Boson’s pilot project alone, the city is expected to receive around 70,000 liters of high-quality treated water per day, furthering Bengaluru’s efforts to promote sustainable and decentralized water reuse.
“Bengaluru’s water challenges can be addressed through the ingenuity of its own innovators. By providing physical space and operational access within its plants, BWSSB aims to strengthen circular water management and move the city closer to long-term water independence,” said Mr. Manohar.
