Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has deployed AI-based smart pump monitoring and optimization technology, IPUMPNET, at 78 of its pumping stations.
This new technology is expected to yield annual energy savings of over ₹ 40 crore, BWSSB said in a statement on Wednesday. The board also claimed to be the first water utility in the world to adopt this patented technology on such a massive scale.
“IPUMPNET is a combination of real-time sensors, artificial intelligence (AI) and predictive diagnostics. Unlike traditional methods, this system continuously monitors the performance of pumps and detects hidden power losses. The system has already identified several pumps consuming energy well above the set limits. Based on this data, the board started the process of replacing low-efficiency pumps with high-efficiency pumps,” explained B.WharsB.
“This technology has allowed us to gain a deeper scientific understanding of our pumping infrastructure, which helps us optimize energy consumption and ensure greater reliability of water supply,” he continued.
“By avoiding energy wastage, BWSSB not only ensures financial savings but also reduces carbon emissions, thereby contributing significantly to Bengaluru’s environmental sustainability,” the council said.
