In a major step towards the transformation of public transport through intelligent communication systems for commuters, an advanced mobility solution called BUSZ is to be introduced to bus operators in Kozhikode district. The project, which is currently in the implementation phase with the support of selected operators, offers a comprehensive set of digital tools, including real-time bus tracking, a mobile commuter application, intelligent passenger information displays and automated on-board notification systems.
The recent first round of discussions with officials of the Association of Bus Carriers produced promising results, with the majority expressing support for the IT initiative. Encouraged by this positive response from key stakeholders, the project is now preparing to be submitted to the district level authorities for final approval and commissioning. It has already completed a two-year trial run covering Kunnamangalam, Mukkam, Thamarassery and Thiruvambadi.
The key attraction of the smart GPS-enabled initiative developed by Mukkom-based Busz Transit Solutions is that it will be offered free of cost to bus operators. Revenues from permitted ad serving will be used to cover the installation and maintenance costs of this public service. The digital toolkit will also support bus time reporting systems at major bus stops and facilitate the display of emergency public alerts and news updates.
“Using advanced GPS technology, the system can provide live bus tracking, accurate arrival forecasts and stop information, ensuring passengers are always informed while operators manage the fleet more efficiently. This is a technology implemented in several foreign countries,” says M. Anvar, a young software developer and CEO of Busz Transit Solutions. He adds that the app, which is to be made available to all commuters, will allow users to plan their journeys, track buses in real-time, find nearby stops and receive instant updates – all from the comfort of their smartphones.
Smart screens installed at bus stations and in vehicles will ensure quick display of traffic details. Preparations are also underway to install them at all KSRTC depots. Displays will be multilingual and customizable. To assist passengers, especially the elderly and visually impaired, the buses will be equipped with GPS-triggered automated audio-visual announcements, reducing driver dependency and improving the travel experience. The app is now available for download on the Google Play Store.
“The vision is to create a joint initiative with the support of public transport operators, technology providers and local administrators to make urban mobility smarter, safer and more reliable. The project is expected to secure clearance from district authorities soon,” says Manoj Babu, a former traffic police officer who is now involved in the initiative. He adds that the project offers an ideal solution for both commuters and bus operators to experience the benefits of technology-integrated smart transport.
