As Tamil Nadu voted in the 2026 assembly elections, department stores in the state suspended operations and companies closed their doors to allow employees to cast their votes. However, several critical industries continued to operate with skeleton staffs that relied heavily on out-of-state workers to keep essential operations running.
The banking sector remained closed for the election, and several banks said employees were given time off to travel to their hometowns to cast their votes. The situation was the same in the real estate sector. A spokesperson for the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India (Credai) said, “All workers have been given a day off today as per the government order so that everyone can exercise their democratic right. Many of our migrant workers have returned to their hometowns for the elections. Those from Assam are currently returning, while workers from West Bengal will continue after the second phase on the 29th.
