Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has a habit of taking the best in the industry. After dismantling Jasprit Bumrah earlier in the tournament, the Rajasthan Royals teenager took on Josh Hazlewood, smashing 19 runs and racing to a 15-ball fifty in a chase of 202 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. | RR vs RCB Scorecard |
The 15-year-old opener started early with two boundaries off Bhuvneshwar Kumar and set the tone for what followed. Yashasvi Jaiswal played his part with two sixes against Hazlewood before falling for 13, but the dismissal didn’t slow things down. Sooryavanshi kept up the pressure, smashing two fours and a six off Abhinandan, before dismantling Hazlewood with a brutal read of 4, 4, 4, 6.

Hazlewood started with his usual hard length and solid line as he first bowled the teenage sensation. However, Vaibhav cut off his back leg and sent the ball past the fielder. The second boundary was lifted over mid-off as Vaibhav used the field to perfection. The third delivery was full but Vaibhav responded with a wild cover and punched through the gap to the off-side.
Hazlewood then tried to outwit the left-hander with a slower bouncer. However, Vaibhav waited on the back foot, read the trick and pulled it into the stands, leaving everyone on the field – including Hazlewood – in awe.
The fifty ranks him among the fastest Indians in IPL history. Only Jaiswal and KL Rahul got there faster, while Yusuf Pathan also had a 15-ball fifty. Sooryavanshi has now achieved the feat twice in 15 balls this season, earlier against CSK and now against RCB.
The milestone was reached with back-to-back sixes from Bhuvneshwar, the first a clean hit over long-on and the second flying over deep backward square despite falling off the top edge with Phil Salt unable to cut it.
Dhruv Jurel added to the surge with 24 runs as the sixth over as Rajasthan Royals reached 97/1 at the end of the powerplay. By the time a strategic time-out was taken, RCB had conceded 97 in six overs and the equation had loosened considerably, with the required rate dropping to 7.5.
Sooryavanshi maintained control of the chase even as RCB struggled to respond with fuller and straighter lines. He nearly scooped up a yorker from Bhuvneshwar and drove it straight back for four before finishing the over with a raised boundary over cover point.
His innings eventually ended on 78 off just 26 balls as he bowled a short delivery from Krunal Pandya towards long-on where Virat Kohli held on to a low catch. The knock, studded with eight fours and seven sixes, left the chase well within reach, with Rajasthan needing just 73 more runs off 71 balls.
