Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday announced the ₹490 crore Uduthorehalla project to lift water from the Cauvery river and fill tanks, reservoirs and check dams to solve the long-standing drinking water crisis in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar district. The project also irrigates 12,000 acres of the command area.
The proposal for the project was submitted by Chamarajanagar MP Sunil Bose for inclusion in the state budget for 2026-27. He had previously expressed confidence that the project would be approved by the government.
Under the project, water will be drawn from the Cauvery near Saragur village in Kollegal taluk and pumped to the Uduthorehalla reservoir in Hanur taluk. From there, water will be distributed to reservoirs, lakes and check dams in Kurattihosur, Santekane and surrounding areas in the taluk.
According to the MP, the project is expected to provide long-term drinking water security to villages up to nine gram panchayats in the region, which have been facing recurrent water shortages.
