After weeks of political uncertainty and legal wrangling, chairmen and vice-chairmen were elected in Ibrahimpatnam and Kyathanpally municipalities on Saturday amid tight security.
In Ibrahimpatnam municipality, BRS councilor T. Sudershan Reddy was elected as the chairman, while Muthyala Shyamala Bhaskar of the BJP was elected as the vice-chairman. The elections were held at the municipal office in the presence of officials, councilors from BRS, BJP and Congress attended the meeting.
The election is governed by an order of the Telangana High Court, which revoked its earlier directive restricting the conduct and declaration of results on the posts of Chairman and Vice-Chairmen in Ibrahimpatnam.
The court was hearing a Habeas Corpus petition claiming that Akula Yadagiri, a BRS councillor, had been detained. He was reportedly restricted from running for the post of chairman. After Mr. Yadagiri was arraigned, it paved the way for the completion of the elections.
The BRS-CPI combine has won control of Kyathanpalli village in Mancherial district, a key civic organization in the state’s coal belt.
G. Sandhya Rani of BRS and M. Saritha of CPI won as Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the civic body in the elections held on Saturday amid tight security.
Seven Congress councilors abstained from the election. The BRS-CPI alliance won 14 out of 22 constituencies in the civic body in the municipal elections held in February this year, giving it an absolute majority in the newly elected council.
Indirect elections for the post of chairman and deputy chairman of Kyathanpally municipality were postponed twice in February due to lack of quorum initially and a clash between BRS and Congress cadres outside the municipal office on 17 February.
Meanwhile, the indirect election to the post of chairman of Khanapur village in Nirmal district was postponed till Sunday due to heated arguments between Congress and BJP councilors during a special session called for the purpose.
