The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has appealed to the governor to recommend an independent probe, either by the CBI or a judge, into the alleged irregularities in the Singareni cache contracts.
A party delegation led by its working president KT Rama Rao called on the Governor at the Lok Bhavan on Tuesday and submitted a detailed statement highlighting cases of alleged corruption and financial irregularities in the tenders for the Singareni deburring.
The BRS team consisted of MPs V. Ravinchandra and D. Damodar Rao, senior leaders and legislators S. Madhusudan Chary, T. Harish Rao, C. Malla Reddy, T. Srinivas Yadav, L. Ramana, Koppula Eshwar and others. They submitted documentary evidence regarding the alleged misuse of public funds, irregular tendering and cost overruns for mining and solar projects carried out by Singareni after the Congress assumed power in December 2023.
Speaking to the media after meeting the Governor, Mr. Rama Rao said that they had formally brought to the notice of the Governor the alleged “large-scale looting” in Singareni and the government’s failure to provide credible explanations despite repeated revelations by BRS leaders, including former minister and deputy floor leader in the assembly Mr. Harish Rao.
He said that after BRS exposed the problem with supporting documents, the ruling party was restless and tried to divert public attention by summoning individuals in the name of investigation instead of responding to the substance of the allegations.
He said the site visit certification clause in the tendering process had never existed before in Singareni or other coal mines in the country and sought to find out why the tenders, which had earlier attracted bids at prices below estimates, were cancelled. He demanded that the government issue a comprehensive white paper detailing the number of companies that have conducted site visits in the last nine months, communications received by Singareni, certificates issued and criteria for selecting suppliers.
For solar power projects, he claimed that while the national average cost was ₹2.5-3 million per megawatt, the Singareni projects in Telangana were awarded at nearly ₹7 million per megawatt, which required an explanation for the massive escalation. He also pointed to a reported 30% increase in the prices of explosives and gelatin sticks used in mining operations, saying that even Singareni directors objected to the increase in board meetings.
