HYDERABAD
Former minister and senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader T. Harish Rao criticized the state government for not declaring a bonus, the workers’ share of profits of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL), even though the Dasara festival is approaching.
In a meeting with representatives of Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham, the BRS-affiliated Singareni trade union, and public officials of the party from coal belt areas here on Thursday, he said giving workers their share of profit before Dasara was a long-standing practice.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, he said that Singareni was facing serious problems since the Congress party came to power. The problems involved not only the workers but also the officers, he said.
He said that under the BRS regime in the past, workers received a 32% profit share. After the Congress came to power, the share was reduced to 16% in the first year, despite the government talking about a higher percentage, and it was further reduced to just 12.5% for 2024-25, he said.
The BRS chief questioned Singareni’s sharp decline in profits, saying the company posted a profit of ₹2,022 crore in 2022-23, ₹4,712 crore in 2023-24 and ₹6,394 crore in 2024-25. However, profits for the current year have not yet been reported. According to information available to BRS, the company’s profit might not cross ₹1,800 crore this year, he said.
He said the decline in profits could not be blamed on the workers as the Singareni workers worked hard. The output per work shift increased from the previous 6.39 tons to 7.56 tons. Employees were doing their best, but bad decisions and administrative failures were affecting the company, he noted.
Mr. Rao attributed delays in tenders, introduction of site visit certificate condition and awarding of bids at higher prices among the reasons for the problems in Singareni. He also claimed that some works were given to people close to the ruling party and demanded an investigation into such decisions.
Regarding housing rights of workers, he said GO 76 was issued by the KCR government in 2019 to provide property rights to Singareni workers. Around 30,000 houses in Singareni areas were registered and handed over to workers, but after the Congress came to power, the implementation of GO 76 was stopped and several workers’ plots were blacklisted, he alleged.
He demanded that the government should immediately provide sale deeds and title to all remaining eligible workers under GO 76. He said that BRS and TBGKS would hold a “Singareni Karmikula Garjana” meeting on October 14 at Ramagundam to highlight the problems of Singareni workers and support their demands.
