LIVE Updates from BRICS Summit 2026: Russian President Vladimir Putin landed in India early on Friday and will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the day on the sidelines of the BRICS 2026 summit. The two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral trade, defense, investment, pharmaceutical and energy cooperation.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov previously said the two sides were also exploring upgrades to BrahMos missiles and that Moscow remained committed to fulfilling its remaining deliveries of the S-400 system and discussing proposed deliveries of Su-57 fighter jets.
Putin is accompanied by a high-level delegation. It is his first personal attendance at a BRICS summit outside of Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.
India is hosting the BRICS Summit 2026 on September 12 and 13. The event will be held at the Bharat Mandapam in Delhi. It comes at a crucial time as the world grapples with war in Iran and Ukraine, while dealing with Donald Trump’s second term as US president.
When will Xi Jinping arrive in India?
While Putin’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi will be closely watched, all eyes will be on the arrival of Chinese President Xi Jinping, his first in seven years. After days of speculation, China has confirmed that Xi Jinping will visit India for the BRICS summit on September 12-13.
Xi is scheduled to arrive in Delhi around 12:25 pm on Saturday and is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with PM Modi in the evening.
Powerful world leaders to attend BRICS summit
In addition to Putin and Xi Jinping, other top world leaders who will attend the BRICS summit include Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Abu Dhabi Crown Minister Zay Abthiop Mohamed Alypian A. Ali and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung are among the top officials attending the summit.
