BRICS Chief Justices Forum: CJI emphasizes strengthening bilateral ties
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday (September 4, 2026) emphasized the importance of the judiciary’s role in building coordinated bilateral cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties during the BRICS Supreme Court Forum.
In his speech at the summit, he also suggested building a common platform for arbitration and mediation to resolve trade disputes.
The Supreme Court here on Friday (September 4, 2026) hosted the BRICS Chief Justices Forum, which was attended by Chief Justices, Chief Justices and senior judicial leaders from BRICS member states and partner countries.
As part of the Forum, CJI Kant held a series of bilateral meetings with heads of judicial delegations on the opening day.
The CJI met judicial leaders from Russia, China, Egypt, Indonesia, UAE, Belarus, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Iran and Uzbekistan on the opening day of the three-day summit.
The bilateral talks revolved around the issues of a memorandum of understanding for judicial cooperation to strengthen relations between countries, the importance of mediation and arbitration in resolving commercial and corporate disputes, and creating a healthy environment for business activities between nations.
The demand for executive commercial courts to strengthen the confidence of foreign investors, the possibilities of mutual recognition of court awards and decrees and the use of state institutions such as the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, for professional exchange programs were also discussed.
Apart from emphasizing the importance of the judiciary’s role in building coordinated bilateral cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties, the CJI also suggested building a common platform for arbitration and mediation to resolve trade disputes.
CJI Kant discussed with the judicial delegations the exchange of legal best practices from different countries, the need for bilateral conferences on laws on contemporary issues, the integration of technological advancements to increase judicial efficiency, particularly through the integration of artificial intelligence, and strengthening people-to-people ties through speedy trials.
The bilateral meetings were an opportunity for direct interaction and exchange of views on matters of common judicial interest and will further enhance engagement between the participating courts, the Supreme Court said in a statement.
Judicial leaders who met the CJI include Igor Krasnov, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation; Zhang Jun, Chief Justice of China and President of the Supreme People’s Court; Boulos Gahmy Iskander Boulos, Chief Justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt; and Sunarto, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Indonesia, the statement said.
Other leaders who met the CJI include Mohammed Hamad Al Badi Al Dhaheri, Chief Justice of the UAE Federal Supreme Court; Andrei Shved, Chairman of the Supreme Court of Belarus; Aslambek Mergaliyev, Chairman of the Supreme Court of Kazakhstan; Mahube Betty Molemela, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa; Ayatollah Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Eje’I, Chief Justice of Iran; and Malikakhon Kalandarova, Vice President of the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan.
The CJI also met all delegates from member and partner countries and held several other bilateral meetings with representatives of member and partner countries.
The three-day meeting is attended by judicial leaders representing Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates, along with partner countries including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
On the second day, leaders of delegations from BRICS member states and partner countries will speak at the forum and share their views on issues of common interest to judicial institutions.
