Roberto Carlos, the famous former Brazil and Real Madrid left back, recently underwent surgery for a heart problem while on vacation in Brazil. The 52-year-old, who currently serves as Real Madrid’s ambassador, underwent an initial medical examination for a blood clot in his leg before a full-body MRI revealed cardiac dysfunction that required immediate attention.
Carlos was hospitalized and underwent a catheterization procedure to correct the problem. The operation, which was originally supposed to last around 40 minutes, was extended to almost three hours due to a complication that arose during the operation. Despite the setback, the procedure was eventually completed successfully.
Reports from the Spanish daily Diario AS confirm that Roberto Carlos is no longer in immediate danger after the operation. However, he will remain under close medical supervision for the next 48 hours to ensure his further recovery and stability.

After the procedure, Roberto Carlos reassured his fans and supporters of his condition by declaring, “I’m fine now.”
Widely regarded as one of football’s most attacking left-backs, Roberto Carlos won 125 caps for Brazil and enjoyed an 11-year career at Real Madrid. He played a significant role in the 1998 World Cup finalist team in Brazil and was also a member of the 2002 World Cup winning team. Additionally, Carlos contributed to Brazil’s Copa America victories in 1997 and 1999.
At club level, Carlos achieved considerable success with Real Madrid, winning the UEFA Champions League three times during his tenure. His performances and consistency made him a central figure in Madrid’s defense and attack throughout his career in Spain.
Carlos is perhaps best remembered for his spectacular ‘banana’ free kick from 35 yards against France in 1997. The goal, scored during an exhibition tournament in Lyon, became famous for its sharp curve and for leaving French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez unable to react. The shot was later the subject of scientific analysis due to its unusual trajectory.
Roberto Carlos said of the iconic goal: “Roberto Carlos later said he had attempted similar strikes earlier in his career, including one while playing for Inter Milan, although he never quite replicated the 1997 effort.
