Brain Stimulation Center inaugurated at Lalitha PVS Institute of Medical Sciences in Guntur

Narasaraopet Lava MP Sri Krishna Devarayalu inaugurated the Lalitha Brain Stimulation Center at Lalitha PVS Institute of Medical Sciences in Guntur on Sunday (October 11, 2026). The new facility introduces Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) therapy as part of comprehensive stroke rehabilitation services.

It aims to improve the recovery and quality of life of stroke survivors and patients with selected neurological disorders through advanced technology and multidisciplinary care, said Dr. P. Vijaya, Head of Department of Neurosciences.

Dr. Vijaya said the non-invasive rTMS procedure uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain and modulate neural activity. It can support rehabilitation in selected patients with limb weakness, speech disorders, spasticity, and certain cognitive impairments. However, it complements classical rehabilitation rather than replacing physiotherapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy.

She added that the hospital has also been providing VitalStim therapy for selected patients with swallowing difficulties after a stroke in the past year. Other rehabilitation equipment includes robotic gloves, botulinum toxin injections to manage muscle stiffness, advanced gait trainers and swallowing rehabilitation.

The institute integrates neurological testing, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy to address individual recovery needs.

While early treatment is key in the acute phase of a stroke, specialized rehabilitation plays an important role in helping survivors regain mobility, communication skills and independence.

The Institute aims to enhance its stroke care services by combining clinical expertise, advanced technology and coordinated rehabilitation to improve functional outcomes and quality of life for patients.
