Total coliform levels at the Brahmapuram and Manakkakadavu Kadambrayar stretches in Ernakulam were found to be eight times higher than the maximum total coliform level of 2,500 per 100 ml as per the primary water quality criteria for outdoor bathing prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Inconclusive levels of total coliform bacteria, indicative of fecal contamination, were found in samples tested in November 2025 as part of the CPCB’s National Water Quality Monitoring Program along polluted river stretches in the country. The findings were part of the monthly progress report presented by the Kerala State Pollution Control Board before the Jal Shakthi Ministry on February 5, 2026.
At the Brahmapuram section, the total coliform level was 21,000 MPN (Most Probable Number) per 100 ml. In Manakkakadav, the corresponding figure was 20,000 MPN/100 ml, indicating higher levels of faecal contamination due to unauthorized discharge of untreated sewage from polluting sources.
Rising levels of total coliform bacteria were found as part of a recent report by the local government department that strict action had been taken against those found responsible for polluting the watercourse. She said local authorities have launched action plans to restore the river to its original state.
Brahmapuram section recorded a similar situation in March 2025 when the total coliform level was recorded as 34,000 MPN/100 ml. The faecal coliform count along the stretch in March 2025 was officially estimated to be 20,000 MPN per 100 ml.
